Saving the world...

A topical selection of local and national websites with information concerning our climate, the environment and consumerism.

www.climatecrisis.net

The film An Inconvenient Truth offers a passionate and inspirational look at one man's fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it. Former US Vice-President Al Gore brings a persuasive argument that we can no longer afford to view global warming as a political issue - rather, it is one of the biggest moral challenges facing our global civilisation.

The Wash Estuary Strategy Group - was formed in 1993 and produced its first Wash Estuary Management Plan (WEMP) in June 1996. Its main aim is to promote the wise use of the area’s resources while maintaining a balance that allows local communities to prosper and safeguards the wildlife and landscape features for future generations. The Wash is found on the east coast of the UK with 12 percent of the area of England draining into it via five rivers - Steeping, Witham, Welland, Nene and Ouse.

Fenland Green Power Co-operative (known as Fens Co-op) was set up to offer community ownership of wind turbines in the Fens of south Lincolnshire. The co-operative aims to enable members of the public to own a stake in their local renewable energy resource, so benefiting from the sale of ‘green’ electricity. The wind farm at Deeping St Nicholas, near Spalding, consists of eight 2 MW wind turbines. Fens Co-op plans to offer community ownership of two of the turbines, which will produce enough electricity to power 2,100 homes and avoid the release of 9000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum.

www.bananalink.org.uk

Banana Link, a small and dynamic not-for-profit co-operative founded in 1996, campaigns for a fair and sustainable banana trade. It works in close partnership with Latin American banana workers trade unions, small Caribbean farmers and civil society organisations in Europe and the US.

www.newgreenconsumer.com

The New Green Consumer Guide offers real, affordable solutions to the world’s most talked-about challenge. Green consumerism is on the rise, but many of us are confused by conflicting information. In this new version of her book (published May 2007) Julia Hailes explains which products, brands and companies are getting it right – and which ones are getting it wrong.

www.tescopoly.org

Tescopoly is an alliance of organisations concerned with the negative impacts of supermarket power. Tesco, for example, now controls 30 percent of the grocery market in the UK and in 2007 the supermarket chain announced over £2.5 billion in profits. Growing evidence indicates that Tesco's success is partly based on trading practices that are having serious consequences for suppliers, farmers and workers worldwide, local shops, the environment and society at large.
